- Some Saudi flight disruptions continue, while limited services have resumed.
- A delayed return does not automatically mean an expat worker loses the job.
- Contact your employer, save records and check your visa’s Return Before date.
If a cancelled flight is keeping you outside Saudi Arabia, don’t stay silent and hope the problem clears by itself. Contact your employer now and create a written record showing why you cannot return.
Flight disruption is continuing, although limited operations have resumed at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. Gulf News, reporting an Indian Embassy advisory, said these operations include some India-bound Flynas services.
The Saudi Press Agency separately reported that Dammam airport operations resumed and air traffic returned to normal after the October 21 incident. Conditions can differ by airport and airline, so you should not assume that every Saudi airport is closed or operating normally.
A Flight Delay Does Not Automatically Cancel Your Job
There is no confirmed nationwide rule automatically cancelling migrant workers’ jobs because they cannot currently reach Saudi Arabia. Absence-related dismissal is a case-specific process involving whether the worker has a valid reason, required warnings and an opportunity to respond.
Saudi labour law links dismissal for absence to being absent without a valid reason for more than 30 days in one year or for more than 15 consecutive days. The employer must also give the worker an opportunity to explain their objections before termination under the listed Article 80 cases.
This means a disrupted flight is not, by itself, the same as automatic dismissal. Your evidence and communication with the employer may matter if the absence is later questioned.
What to Send Your Employer
Write to your manager or human resources department by email, WhatsApp or another channel that keeps a traceable record. Explain the flight cancellation, airport disruption or border problem, attach evidence and ask for written acknowledgement of your revised return date.
For example, if you are in Kerala after annual leave and your return flight is cancelled, send the cancellation notice and details of your rebooking attempts immediately. Don’t rely only on a telephone conversation.
Keep copies of:
- Your employment contract.
- Salary and bank records.
- Your Iqama and visa details.
- Flight cancellation notices and rebooking attempts.
- Every message exchanged with your employer.
Saudi labour rules require two copies of the employment contract, with the worker and employer each keeping one. If you already have your copy, store it with the rest of your records.
Check your flight directly with the airline before travelling to the airport. A report about Riyadh or Dammam may not describe the position at another airport or for another carrier.
Check Your Return Before Date and Seek Help Early
Look at the Return Before date on your exit-and-re-entry visa through the official Saudi system. Absher guidance says this is the final day on which you are permitted to return to Saudi Arabia.
If that date is approaching while you remain stranded, contact your employer and the relevant passport authorities promptly. There is no confirmed general announcement automatically extending every affected worker’s visa or excusing every absence.
If your employer records the absence as unjustified, withholds wages or terminates your employment without allowing you to explain, you can start an employment dispute through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development’s electronic amicable-settlement service. An unresolved case can be referred to the labour court within 21 working days from the date of the first lawsuit. The ministry lists 19911 as its telephone number for this service.
You can also contact your own embassy or consulate for help specific to your nationality. Indian workers inside Saudi Arabia have access to the official 24-hour toll-free assistance line 800 247 1234.
