HR Interview Cheat Codes: 10 Questions Gulf HR Always Asks

HR interview cheat codes: 10 questions Gulf HR always asks

A Gulf job interview can feel like a game you play only once. The good news: HR asks almost the same questions every time. Learn the “cheat code” for each one, and you walk in already knowing what to say.

These are not tricks to fool anyone. They are simple answer patterns that help you give clear, honest answers under pressure. Practise each one out loud before your interview.

Level 1: “Tell me about yourself”

Cheat code: Current job + one strong skill + why this job.

Keep it to about 60 seconds. Skip your school life and family details. Example: “I have worked as a light vehicle driver in Kerala for four years with a clean record. I know city routes well and I am good with customers. I want to grow my career with a UAE logistics company like yours.”

Level 2: “Why do you want to work in the UAE / Saudi Arabia?”

Cheat code: Growth + exposure + this employer. Not only money.

Saying “for a better salary” is honest but weak on its own. Add what you want to learn: “The UAE has some of the busiest airports and hotels in the world. Working here will give me experience I cannot get at home, and your company is a leader in this field.”

Level 3: “What do you know about our company?”

Cheat code: Three facts from their official website.

Before the interview, read the company’s official website and careers page. Note what they do, where they operate and one recent project or achievement. HR quickly notices who has prepared and who has not.

Level 4: “Why did you leave your last job?”

Cheat code: Look forward, not back.

Never complain about your old manager or company. Say what you want next: “I learned a lot there, but I am looking for a bigger role and international experience.” If you were laid off, say it simply and calmly.

Boss Level 5: “What is your expected salary?”

Cheat code: Research first, then give a range.

Check what the role usually pays in that country before the interview. Give a realistic range, and say you are open to discussing the full package, because in the Gulf the offer often includes housing, transport or allowances. Saying “anything is fine” can make you look desperate, and a number far above the market can end the interview.

Level 6: “When can you join?”

Cheat code: Your real notice period, said clearly.

Tell the truth. If your notice period is one month, say so. Promising to join “tomorrow” and then failing to do so damages your name with that recruiter. Many employers will wait for a good candidate.

Level 7: “What visa are you on? Do you have a driving licence?”

Cheat code: Exact facts, no guessing.

Know your visa type and its expiry date, and whether you hold a Gulf driving licence or only an Indian one. Have copies ready on your phone. Remember that a visit visa does not allow you to work in the UAE.

Level 8: “What is your weakness?”

Cheat code: A real, small weakness + how you are fixing it.

Avoid “I am a perfectionist”. Try: “My spoken Arabic is basic, so I am learning common phrases for customers.” It shows honesty and effort.

Level 9: “Are you OK with shifts, overtime or working outdoors?”

Cheat code: Honest yes, plus one question about the schedule.

Gulf jobs in hotels, airports, logistics and construction often run on shifts. Say yes if you truly can, and ask how the shifts rotate. Do not agree to something you cannot do for two years.

Final Level 10: “Do you have any questions for us?”

Cheat code: Always ask two.

Saying “no questions” ends the game early. Ask: “What does a normal working day look like in this role?” and “What are the next steps after this interview?”

Game Over Moves: Never Do These

  • Bad-mouthing your previous employer
  • Saying “any job is OK for me”
  • Lying about experience, visa or licence details
  • Joining a video interview from a noisy place or arriving late
  • Paying anyone money to “pass” an interview. Genuine employers do not charge for interviews or job offers.
