Will AI Kill Your Job? 5 Gulf Jobs at Risk and 5 That Are Growing

Will AI take your job in the Gulf illustration

“Will AI take my job?” It is a question many people in the Gulf are quietly asking – the office assistant who sees ChatGPT write emails in seconds, the cashier watching self-checkout machines arrive, the driver who has heard about robotaxis in Abu Dhabi.

The honest answer is: AI will change many jobs, remove some, and create many new ones. What matters is which side of that change you are on. Here is what the latest research says, in plain words, and what you can do about it.

The Big Picture: More Jobs, Different Jobs

WEF Future of Jobs 2025: 170 million new jobs and 92 million jobs lost by 2030

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 surveyed employers around the world. By 2030 they expect:

Advertisements
  • about 170 million new jobs to be created,
  • about 92 million jobs to disappear,
  • a net gain of about 78 million jobs.

So AI is not “killing all jobs”. It is moving work from some roles to others – and the people who move with it do well.

Jobs Most at Risk

The roles shrinking fastest are the ones built on repeating the same task on a screen or at a counter. The WEF report names:

  • Cashiers and ticket clerks
  • Administrative assistants and executive secretaries
  • Data entry and basic accounting clerks
  • Printing workers

Recruiters in the UAE quoted by Gulf News add call-centre agents, some customer service roles, some analyst roles and many entry-level generalist jobs. These jobs won’t vanish overnight, but there will be fewer of them, and the ones left will expect you to use AI tools.

Jobs That Are Safer – and Growing

Safer jobs vs jobs at risk from AI: drivers, construction, nurses versus cashiers, data entry, admin

Jobs that need hands, eyes and people skills in the real world are much harder to automate. The same WEF report says the biggest growth in numbers will come from:

  • Delivery and light truck drivers
  • Building construction workers and finishing trades
  • Shop salespersons and food processing workers
  • Nurses and care workers

At the other end, the fastest-growing roles are big data specialists, fintech engineers, AI and machine-learning specialists, software developers, security specialists and even autonomous and electric vehicle specialists.

That is good news for the Gulf, where most expat jobs are in construction, logistics, hospitality, healthcare and retail.

What Is Happening in the Gulf Right Now

AI skills in the Gulf: 1 in 30 jobs mention AI, up to 92% higher salary in the UAE
  • 1 in 30 jobs now mention AI. A GulfTalent analysis of vacancies in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar found AI skills or tools in 3.4% of professional jobs in the first half of 2026 – almost three times the 1.2% in 2022.
  • In tech, it is 1 in 3. In banking and audit it is about 1 in 15; in construction, retail, healthcare and hospitality about 1 in 100.
  • AI skills pay more. PwC’s 2026 AI Jobs Barometer found UAE workers with AI skills earn up to 92% more in financial services, and about 50% more in tech, media and telecoms.
  • The UAE is hiring for AI fast. It rose from 21st to 13th in the world for AI-related hiring in four years.

Most of these AI jobs are not about building AI. GulfTalent found only 9% involve building it – the rest are about using, implementing or selling AI tools. That door is open to normal office workers, not just programmers.

How to Protect Your Job: 6 Simple Steps

  1. Start using AI tools at work. Use ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to draft emails, summarise reports or plan schedules. People who use AI well replace people who don’t – AI itself rarely does.
  2. Add skills a machine can’t copy. Customer handling, supervising a team, solving problems on site.
  3. Get a certificate in a growing field. Safety (NEBOSH/IOSH), HVAC, electrical, a UAE driving licence, nursing or care.
  4. If your job is at risk, plan a side step. A cashier can move into sales or store supervision; a data entry clerk into data checking or operations; an admin assistant into project coordination.
  5. Show it on your CV. Write “uses AI tools for reports and scheduling” with a real example. Try our free ATS CV Maker.
  6. Keep learning a little every week. Fifteen minutes a day is enough to stay ahead.

So, Will AI Take Your Job?

If your job is mostly repeating the same screen task, it will change a lot – start upgrading now. If your job needs your hands, your judgement or your people skills, AI is more likely to become a tool you use than a machine that replaces you. Either way, the safest worker is the one who learns to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which jobs will AI replace first?

Cashiers, ticket clerks, data entry, admin and secretarial roles, printing and basic accounting work are shrinking fastest, according to the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025.

Are driver and construction jobs safe from AI?

For now, yes. Delivery drivers and construction workers are among the jobs expected to grow the most by 2030.

Do I need to learn coding?

No. Most AI-related jobs in the Gulf are about using AI tools, not building them. Learning to use common AI tools well is enough for most roles.
