If you drive in the UAE – your own car, a taxi, a bus, a truck or a delivery bike – some important things are about to change. The UAE has announced new traffic rules under Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026, and they start on 1 January 2027.
The rule everyone is talking about: no one may drive for more than 9 hours in any 24-hour period. But that is not the only change. There are new duties for delivery riders, a 40 km/h limit on residential roads, a cap on how many cars one person can register, and new rules for e-scooters.
Here is everything in simple words, and what it means for you if you work as a driver or are looking for a driving job in the UAE.

The 9-Hour Driving Limit: What It Really Means
Under the new rules, a driver must not drive more than nine hours within any 24-hour period. The rule is listed under the general duties of all drivers, so it is not written only for truck or bus drivers.

A few things to understand:
- Tired driving is banned too. Even if you have driven less than nine hours, you must not drive when you are so tired that it affects safe driving.
- Emergencies are different. Emergency vehicles on urgent calls, and drivers taking an injured or critically ill person to hospital, are exempt from posted speed limits, with safety conditions.
- The limit can change. The Federal Traffic Council can amend the nine-hour limit later.
- Fines and checking. No fine for crossing nine hours has been announced yet, and the rules do not yet say how hours will be counted for private cars. Trucks already have tachographs and speed limiters, so heavy vehicle drivers should expect closer checks.
For drivers working long shifts – taxi, limousine, school bus, heavy truck or delivery – this is the change to watch. If your company asks you to drive 10–12 hours a day today, your shift pattern will likely have to change from January. Keep a simple record of your daily driving hours from now on.
New Rules for Delivery Riders and Professional Drivers
Bike delivery is one of the biggest job areas for new arrivals in the UAE, so these points matter a lot:

- Valid professional driving permit – you must carry it and show it when asked.
- Log in to the approved system installed in your vehicle before you start.
- Wear the prescribed uniform while delivering.
- No passenger on a delivery motorbike while making deliveries.
- No delivery backpacks – orders must be carried in approved loading equipment (a fitted delivery box).
- No prohibited items, or anything against public order, may be transported or delivered.
Applying for a delivery rider job? Ask the company if they provide the uniform, the approved delivery box and the app or system login. A good employer will already be preparing for these rules.
Speed, Seat Belts and Other Driver Duties
- 40 km/h maximum on internal residential roads.
- Seat belts for the driver and all passengers, front and rear.
- No mobile phone or other distractions while driving.
- Check that your vehicle is roadworthy before a trip, and move a broken-down vehicle off the road as quickly as possible.
- Extra care near schools, hospitals and pedestrian crossings. Do not pass between a school bus or public transport vehicle and the pavement.
- On motorways: no stopping outside marked areas, no reversing and no U-turns.
- Cyclists must wear a helmet and ride in single file.
How Many Cars Can One Person Register in the UAE?
Under the new rules, a resident can register two vehicles without additional fees. Each extra vehicle carries additional charges, and there is a cap of five vehicles per resident. A two-year registration period may also be allowed for eligible light vehicles, subject to approval.
E-Scooter and E-Bike Rules
- Minimum age for an e-scooter, e-bike or small motorised bike permit: 15 years.
- Permits are valid for 3 years and can be renewed.
- Ride only on routes marked for them – not on roads meant for cars.
- Front light, red rear brake light, a horn or bell and working brakes are required.
- Small motorised bikes: engine up to 50cc and a top speed of 45 km/h.
- The same rules apply to rental scooters.
Driving Licence Validity for Expats
When a temporary licence holder turns 21, the licence becomes valid for 5 years for expatriate residents (10 years for UAE and GCC nationals). The same periods apply on renewal for licences first issued at 21 or older. Bus and heavy machinery drivers face stricter eyesight standards.

What Should Drivers and Job Seekers Do Now?
- Do not panic. Nothing changes until 1 January 2027.
- If you drive long hours for work, talk to your supervisor about how shifts will be planned under the 9-hour rule.
- Delivery riders: make sure your professional permit is valid and ask your company about the uniform and approved box.
- Looking for a driving job? Companies will need more drivers to cover the same hours, which could mean more openings. See the latest driver jobs in Dubai and all jobs in Dubai today.
- Watch for the fine list. GluJob will update this page when penalties are announced.
